mosaic it bends the corners of the photos!

From Mayagüez:
The easiest route: In Mayagüez
(Road #2) take Exit 161, this will enter road 100 that goes to Cabo
Rojo. This exit is after Mayagüez Mall if you are coming from this
town, and before the Mall if you are coming from Ponce. Close to
the end of road 100, between the markers 14.3 and 14.1, you will
see a vacant lot... the Morales Farm (Finca Morales). You are in Boquerón, but
the small town (Poblado) is at your right. You can do a
"U" turn about a couple of hundred meters down the road. When
back in the road 100 locate the entrance to the Farm now a t your right (see map ahead).
From Ponce:
After Yauco take Exit 194 (Road 116)
towards Guánica. Les than a minute after La Parguera entrance (Road 304), you will find Road 305. The exit is to your left, close
to a Gas Station. This road will make a "T" with road
303, here turn right. Road 303) will make a "T" too, but
with Road 101, here turn left. Road 101 will take you
directly to el Poblado de Boquerón; you will pass Panadería Daisy
(Daisy Bakery) and Road 100. Exit to the 100, towards Mayagüez,
close to km 41.2, to your right is the Morales Farm (Finca Morales) which look more like a vacant lot.
WERE TO
PARK: SINGLETRACK EL CANGREJO (RUTA PIRATA)
(Use the map in the Cabo
Rojo page as a reference!)
1. In road 100 at the Finca Morales Once in road 100, after marker
14.1 km, you will find the entrance to Finca Morales. I am not
sure if it’s permitted to park there. But the space between the
Farm and road 100 is very large, enough to park 30 cars without fearing
for an accident.
2. Refugio de Aves de Boquerón (Boquerón
Bird Sanctuary) You can park in the visitor
center during business hours (Monday to Sunday from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm).
For more detailed information visit the page of the Sanctuary in this
website. In you park here you will add approximately 2 miles (one
way) to the route distance.
3. El Viandón (See
photo!) In front of this small store
(Colmado) ther is a very wide dirt triangle. It can accommodate
somewhere between 10 and 12 cars. This place will add 2.6
miles to the route. El Viandón is the meting place of
"Los Piratas de Boquerón". They part from there every
Sunday at 8:00 am.
Singletrack El Cangrejo
(Ruta Pirata)
This map was made thanks to Dr. Jim Rivera Rigau of the Boquerón Pirates Club. Jim
supplied a
topographic map with the route and important points marked. We send them a map
like the one
present here, but with more details on height and more small roads.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The entrance to the farm road (Finca) is located close to km
14.2. If you stand on this entrance, at your left, in the
forested area, you will find the single track. You don't have to
enter the Farm (Finca).
The first part of the single track goes trough a
forested area that is located along road 100. This connects to a
dirt road that finds the Gotcha Camp. After this place, the route
gains on height slowly, and later the soil changes to rocky. The
hill is not too step, and not too difficult, but your spent valuable
energy there.
When you turn left at the 50 meters marker
the road increase in height a little, but then it goes all the way down hill.
It stops close to some no yet developed housing lots. At
the end of this road, you will find a hill and at it's top, a barbwire gate.
This gate can be opened easily or do like many... jump the
fence! If you open the gate, please be certain that the last one
of you group close it!
This road intersects Los Martines road.
This road is very easy until you find a very step hill after the 35
meters marker. It changes abruptly from 35 to 65 meters
The entrance of the single track that connects
with road 100 can be found just after you get to the top of this hill.
The entrance is marked in the pavement with spray paint. The mark
reads "a la izquierda" (left). In the beginning the
single track descends, but mostly is flat. It will end with a small
hill but very step. Here you will find yourself in road 100.
In general terms this last part of the route is down
hill. But you have to be careful not to miss the several entrances
of the single track at your left. It enters and exit forested areas several
times. These entrances were marked by arrow sings and flagging
tape hanging from tree branches. After you pass the road of the
Gotcha camp, the rest of the trail follows the grass back to the
entrance of the single track.
FAMILY: Depending
on your family interests there is lots to do! Cabo Rojo is known
mainly by its beautiful beaches. There are lots close by, for
example; El Balneario de Boquerón, El Combate beach and La Playuela at
the end of the Lighthouse. You could also enjoy the stores of the
Poblado (small town). In the area where the Combate trail
and road 301 meets (see the photos),
you will find The Salt Flats
Interpretative Center. Just in the other side of the road you will
find an observation tower of the US Fish & Wildlife Service.
Also you can hike the Lighthouse area and enjoy the
beautiful views!!!
